Vážení přítomní, Vaše Excelence, dámy a pánové, sestry a bratři,

sešli jsme se zde pod klenbou chrámu naší svatovítské katedrály, která tvoří vertikálu panoramatu Prahy, hlavního města, které je jím od počátku našich dějin. Spolu s horizontálou správy země, kterou je Pražský hrad, tvoří tyto dvě přímky kříž naší identity. To je rodiště zesnulé paní Madeleine Albrightové, opravdové první dámy světové politiky, svobody, demokracie a skutečné víry v naději na právo a lidskou důstojnost. Stále mám pocit, že usedla po pravici presbytáře, tak jak tomu bylo při pohřbu prezidenta Václava Havla.

Narodila se ve stínu i světle zmíněného panoramatu a to je důvodem, proč jsme naslouchali slovům Knihy knih, Bible, která vytváří zlatou, či červenou nit našich dějin a vrozený vklad Madeleine Albrightové. Její vnitřní život byl spojen s životem této země a, jak rodné jméno prozrazuje, přinesla si do vínku hodnoty a vlastnosti tří etnik, které zbudovaly kulturu a civilizaci naší vlasti (Češi, Němci a Židé). Bez její rozhodnosti a pomoci nebyli bychom svobodnou zemí, která se těší bezpečnosti zajištěnou mezinárodní smlouvou obrané aliance. Nebylo náhodou, že o zesnulé Madeleine Albrightové hovořil ve Varšavě v nedělním odpoledni prezident Joe Biden. Ne nadarmo zahájil svoje provolání slovy Jana Pavla II.: „Nebojte se!“. Odvaha, statečnost, vytrvalá věrnost vyrůstající z víry, spojuje naše zesnulé obnovitele života ve svobodě, kterými jsou Václav Havel, Jan Pavel II. a Madeleine Albrightová. Přesvědčení a víra opřené o důvěru Tomu, který Je a který o nás a naše plány a sny pečuje s otcovskou láskou, mluvil prorok Izajáš, jeden z největších spisovatelů a básníků naší civilizace, která spojuje Jeruzalém, Athény i Řím. Právě zmíněné panorama Prahy je symbolem chrámu, vzdělání a vlády práva. Je výzvou k respektu lidské důstojnosti a svobodě v odpovědnosti a otevřenosti. Izajášova eschatologická hostina je hymnický obraz o životě bez konce, o životě, který nekončí. Tuto vizi podporují Ježíšova slova z šesté kapitoly Janova evangelia. Slovo je pokrmem do věčného života v Tom, který Je a z jehož náruče On vyšel, aby nás do ní uvedl. Tak podobně končil i náš rozhovor s Václavem Havlem v závěru jeho života: „On Je! A my v Něm!“ A i ona statečná žena Madeleine Albrightová s vervou v modlitbě a zpěvu v rodném jazyce doprovázela svého přítele a prezidenta Václava Havla při zádušní mši sv. zde v katedrále.

Při rozloučení jsem si dovolil říct paní Madeleine: „Vy jste s námi koncelebrovala tuto mši (neboť recitovala veškerý text i s kněžími), odpověděla: „Já vím, ale emoce a možnost rodného jazyka v modlitbě mě unesly.“ Díky, paní Madeleine, za tuto modlitbu! Díky za vše, co jste učinila pro svobodný a důstojný život v naší zemi. A nejenom v naší zemi, ale ve všech zemích, které byly ovládány říší zla.

Homily by Dominik Cardinal Duka OP during the requiem for Mrs. Madeleine Albright in the Cathedral of St Vitus, Wenceslas, Adalbert and the Virgin Mary in Prague on 30 March 2022 at 6 pm.

Dear present, Your Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, sisters and brothers,

we are gathered here under the vault of the cathedral of our St. Vitus Cathedral, which forms the vertical of the panorama of Prague, the capital city that has been so since the beginning of our history. Together with the horizontal of the administration of the country, which is Prague Castle, these two lines form the cross of our identity. This is the birthplace of the late Madeleine Albright, a true first lady of world politics, freedom, democracy and a true belief in the hope of justice and human dignity. I still feel that she sat on the right hand side of the chancel, as she did at the funeral of President Václav Havel.

She was born in the shadow and light of that panorama, and that is why we have listened to the words of the Book of Books, the Bible that forms the golden or red thread of our history and the innate contribution of Madeleine Albright. Her inner life was linked to the life of this country and, as her birth name reveals, she brought with her the values and characteristics of the three ethnic groups that built the culture and civilization of our homeland (Czechs, Germans and Jews). Without her determination and help we would not be a free country enjoying the security guaranteed by the international treaty of the defense alliance. It was no coincidence that the late Madeleine Albright was the subject of President Joe Biden's speech in Warsaw on Sunday afternoon. It was not for nothing that he opened his address with the words of John Paul II: "Do not be afraid!". Courage, bravery, steadfast loyalty growing out of faith, unites our late restorers of the life of freedom, Václav Havel, John Paul II and Madeleine Albright. Conviction and faith based on trust in the One who Is and who cares for us and our plans and dreams with fatherly love, spoke the prophet Isaiah, one of the greatest writers and poets of our civilization, who connects Jerusalem, Athens and Rome. The Prague skyline just mentioned is a symbol of the temple, education and the rule of law. It is a call to respect human dignity and freedom in responsibility and openness. Isaiah's eschatological banquet is a hymnic image of life without end, of life that does not end. This vision is supported by the words of Jesus in the sixth chapter of John's Gospel. The Word is food for eternal life in the One who is and from whose arms He came forth to bring us into it. Our conversation with Václav Havel at the end of his life ended in a similar way: “He Is! And we in Him!” And also that brave woman, Madeleine Albright, accompanied her friend and President Václav Havel in prayer and song in her native language at the memorial Mass here in the Cathedral.

As we parted, I took the liberty of saying to Madeleine, "You concelebrated this Mass with us (as she recited all the text with the priests), she replied, "I know, but the emotion and the possibility of the native language in prayer blew me away." Thank you, Madame Madeleine, for this prayer! Thank you for all you have done for a free and dignified life in our country. And not only in our country, but in all countries that have been ruled by the evil empire.
